Master Bedroom Progress - Sneak Peak

PLEASE WAIT LOADING ,,,,,,,,,

Our master bedroom project is coming along nicely.  Even though we are nowhere near finished, I thought I would share a few sneak peak pictures and show you some of our progress.  My goal is to give our room the feeling of a Chic Boutique Hotel Suite.

This first picture was taken just before we started the project.  The two queen beds were delivered and then we started to take apart the room.  We decided to switch from one king bed to two queen beds.

Wondering why two beds?  To make a long story short, my hubby has restless leg syndrome (which means his legs sometimes twitch at night).  I myself am a super light sleeper.  He often lost sleep while worrying about potentially waking me up, and sometimes I was losing sleep because he was a bit too restless.  With the two beds, I don't have to kick him out of bed to sleep in the guest room anymore, I can just kick him over to the next bed :)

We decided to do a wood wall treatment on the wall that previously had the faux headboard on it.  These wood panels wall will add some texture and architectural interest to the room.  In a later post I will share how we did this wall treatment on a tiny budget.

This wall will be painted the same silver sage as the other walls in the room.  The added texture of the wood and the seams will add more interest to the space.  This room has an 8 foot ceiling height.  We ran the boards vertical to give the illusion of the room being taller than it actually is (the boards running up and down elongate the feeling of the room).  If we had run the boards horizontally, which was my first thought, the room would feel shorter.

Our bedroom is pretty large.  It measures almost 18' across x 14' long with an extra 2' deep niche that we will have a wall unit and bookshelves in.  Our room is plenty large to have two beds.  You wouldn't know it in this next picture because our beds are crammed into the middle of the room while we are working around them.  We are still sleeping in the room while the project is going on.  We left a perimeter of about four feet around the edges so we have room to work on the walls and trim.

These beds will each have a linen look canvas headboard (DIY'd from paint dropcloths) when we are finished.  The wall with the three windows will be covered in off white floor to ceiling drapery.  Full wall drapes sort of like what you would find in a luxury hotel (but mine won't be nearly as expensive)!

We are in the process of installing the new 6" baseboards.  We've installed them on the head wall first.  We are getting this wall completed first so we can push the beds back soon.

I've found that filling all of the nail holes and seams with wood putty and then sanding them by hand is pretty time consuming.  So far I have finished the main wall and touched up the paint over the putty spots.  All of the little details take quite a bit of time so it will still be awhile before we are finished.

This past week we took a trip to Ikea and purchased the ceiling track drapery hardware and the curtain panels.  Installing a whole wall of floor to ceiling drapery will also help the room feel taller.

This coming weekend we will hopefully make allot of progress.  I am hopeful that we will get all of the construction parts of the room completed.

Once we get to that point, the fun of the actual decorating begins... I can hardly waht!!!

Tonight hubby and I are going to Home Goods to look for a few items for the room... (lucky me)  I love that store!

Until next time...
Happy decorating!

Steal of a DEAL - 6" Baseboard & Wnod Trim SALE

PLEASE WAIT LOADING ,,,,,,,,,
Check out this amazing deal we got on tall baseboards and wood casings.  We got 224 feet of new trim molding for just $90 total.  This is approximately 70% less than it would have cost us at a home improvement store!  We saved more than $200 (yippee... I love a good deal)!

We have a small flea market/swap meet here in Beaumont California every weekend.  This wood trim vendor has been selling at the same location every single Saturday for over four years.  She has a good selection and the prices are unbelievable!  I've never seen molding deals like this!  Even the thickest moldings run under 50 cents per foot.  She has plenty of stock to pull from if we ever need huge quantity from her.  The moldings all come in 8' lengths.  The shorter lengths do make a little more work when installing (due to extra seams)... but for these prices it is so worth it!!!  Plus our little SUV only holds the 8' lengths so they are perfect for us :)

We will be going back for crown molding soon.  I can get crown molding for the entire bedroom for under $40... Amazing!!!

We got all of our baseboard and casing home and put it into our paintbooth.  Then it took awhile to figure out our new paint gun.  You have to thin the paint so it flows properly out of the gun.  It took a few tries, and a little patience but we finally got it right.  Now that we know how, painting projects will be so much easier in the future!

After we sprayed the moldings we moved them to a plastic sheet drop cloth on our garage floor to finish drying.  That way we had more room in the paint booth to spray more pieces.  All of the trim is now primed, painted and ready to install.  The paint finish looks so professional... I'm lovin it!

Next we are painting our bedroom a light silver sage color and doing a wood wall treatment on one of the walls... After that we can install these new moldings.

More pictures of our makeover progress to come soon.

Until next time,
Happy decorating!

An E-Design Before and After!

PLEASE WAIT LOADING ,,,,,,,,,
A while back, I ran a room design giveaway on my blog, and Melissa was the winner! She chose to make changes to her master bedroom, and she is well on her way! She has made so many great changes and accomplished a lot in a short time. Here is the before:

After in Progress:

After: Stencil Wall Complete!

Melissa has made amazing progress on her master bedroom! The stencil was tedious work, but she did a fabulous job. Originally, we were gning to go with stripes for the bed wall. When Melissa had the opportunity to use a stencil, we went for it! I am so glad she took on this project- the results are so worth it! Melissa has a great DIY blog, The Happier Homemaker. Make sure to stop by and check it out. She discusses her stencil project HERE. She is currently running a stencil giveaway, so make sure to enter today!

Our Master Bedroom Makeover Begins

PLEASE WAIT LOADING ,,,,,,,,,
A few weeks ago I got the idea to makeover our master bedroom to look like a Chic Boutique Hotel Room/Suite.  So last we week as we prepared to begin our project we began with several trips to both Home Depot and Lowe's Home Improvement stores.  On the first trip we got a few new power tools... because new toys for my hubby = a new room for me :)

We also got a new air compressor so we can use a paint sprayer in our DIY garage paint booth (instead of using spray cans) for the new wood trim that we are going to do in the room.  This will make painting furniture so much easier too!

We (or should I say, my hubby) used a rubber mallet and a crowbar to gently remove the molding from our wall faux headboard.  We were concerned we might have quite a bit of wall damage since we had used construction adhesive and nails to hold it on.  We were lucky that it removed easily and the wall damage was minimal.

I let my hubby do all the dirty work while I took the pictures :)   I'm pretty smart, don't you think?

We also removed all of our door casing and baseboards.  We will be installing new larger baseboard and door casings in the remodel.  I wanted to add some texture to the room so we are doing a wood wall treatment on this wall.  I have not decided yet whether or not to do crown moldings.  We might, but I will decide that later, as the project progresses.

This project will take us a few weeks to fully complete since my hubby works full time.  He is only available weekends and nights to be my handyman.  I've mentioned before that I have a chronic pain illness so I come up with the ideas.  If my ideas  involve physical labor, he gets to do it.  I am so lucky that he enjoys it!

The plans for this bedroom also include DIY headboards from drop-cloths that will look like linen, furniture makeovers and vintage find up-cycles.  It's going to be fun.  I hope you follow along.

Tomorrow I will share more of our progress.

Until next time...

Happy Fall Y'all - Kitchen Pumpkin Decor

PLEASE WAIT LOADING ,,,,,,,,,

This scarecrow is so cute.  I actually bought him for our backyard, but once I got him home, I propped him up in the corner that enters our kitchen... and I decided to keep him there :)

The Fall decor in my kitchen was really easy to throw together.  I just bought a few real pumpkins, then found the Burlap lined wire basket, the pie sign and the little wood pumpkin crate on sale at Michaels for under $20 total.

A major no no to many people are the use of silk flowers.  Oh no, no faux :)  Many swear that they will only use fresh flowers.  But that does get pretty expensive.  So yes, I did use silk flowers... Please don't hold it against me.  I am okay with them if they are a good quality.  Although I should mention that I do use only fresh flowers when they are at the dining table. When people sit close to them, it becomes obvious when they are faux!  I had gotten the silk Fall leaves, flowers and floral picks at an after season clearance sale and I like to be able to use and re-use them.  I put a mason jar in the back corner for the flowers.  I popped the floral picks into a few places (wherever I thought they looked good).  The scale I already had from a prior thrift store trip... and the chalkboard I had previously DIY'd for $3.

I did not take the time to do fancy chalk art (although I probably should).  For now I just put a cute little saying on it.

I love the way the fall colors pop off of my dark backsplash wall.

How do you feel about the use of silk flowers?  I'd love to hear your thoughts...

Happy Fall Y'all...

Our DIY Painted Pumpkins

PLEASE WAIT LOADING ,,,,,,,,,
Every year in the fall, I love to put out my painted pumpkins! I have been doing these topiary pumpkins for a few years now, and they are still going strong! They are artificial pumpkins that I decorate with paint and sponge brushes. Through the weather changes, they need some touch ups every now and then. Here is what the front porch looks like this year:

What I love abnut these pumpkins, is that I can keep them up throughout the fall season, including Thanksgiving! When I change out the wreath and take off the spider/webs, it becomes a great festive porch for the entire season! I love decorating for this time of year, and I smile when I pull into the driveway. To see what the pumpkins looked like last year and for the full DIY tutorial, go HERE.

DIY: Hemming Your Curtains - The No Sew Way!

PLEASE WAIT LOADING ,,,,,,,,,
I meant to show you this DIY project last week, but I fell a bit behind. I recently added new drapery panels to our master bedroom, but they were too long. 84" panels would have been too short and 95" panels (the size I bought) were too long. Well, I don't sew, so I needed to figure out a cost effective way to handle this dilemma. My chosen option... stitch witchery! This is the first time I ever used this, and I loved it! It can also be called 'hemming tape' and it's a no sew option for adding decorative trim, hemming panels or for any fabric project. Here is the finished product: (They still need to be steamed, but hey- some day!)

Here is my DIY tutorial:

1. I first hung my panels on the curtain rod and pinned them to the desired height. That way, I didn't have panels that ended up being too short! I wanted to make sure they puddled about 1-2 inches on the ground. Then lay your drapery panels out and measure how much you want to hem. I hemmed up about 8 inches.

2. Next, place a couple strips of stitch tape on your panels. I tried to place them towards the top and bottom of the hem, making sure they held up well.

3. Then, bring your panel up to the desired height and press down with a damp cloth, then warm iron. Make sure you continue to move the iron, using small movements.

4. Gently pull back on the part you hemmed, to ensure you have a strong bond. And there you have it- hemming the no sew way!

Pretty soon, I hope to show more of the room, including some new pillows! Stay tuned...
